A disappointing performance by us which prompted manager Jim McLean to describe as, "the worst of the season", at least had the consolation of maintaining our unbeaten record. Hibs, who looked a vastly improved side, afforded us the minimum of scoring chances as we controlled the early stages. One of the best chances came as early as the third minute when Billy McKinlay's lofted pass found Mixu Paatelainen out on the left, but he drove his shot inches past the far post. John Clark headed past in the thirteenth minute and eight minutes later Kevin Gallacher pounced on a long clearance by John Clark, but Kevin's first-time shot was well off target. Gareth Evans got in Hibs first goal attempt in 27 minutes but we continued to dominate with Mixu Paatelainen and John dark getting in headers.
Next it was Jim Mclnally, who powered in a 35 yard drive which Goram was glad to touch over the bar. To the consternation of United fans, Hibs took the lead with only their second sortie upfield. Gordon Rae broke from his own half and ended up sending a dipping shot past Billy Thomson five minutes from the interval. Before the break Kevin Gallacher had a fine run in from the left but his parting shot went straight at Goram.
Hibs, obviously boosted by that goal, grew in confidence and Billy Thomson had to look lively to defy Gordon Rae following a corner. The United 'keeper had to be even sharper in the 63rd minute to block a point blank header from Steve Archibald. However, in the 70th minute Mixu Paatelainen chased a long ball from Billy McKinlay and was fouled by Gordon Rae in the box. The Finn got up to comfortably score from the spot.
Hibs immediately retaliated and Billy Thomson made a fine one handed save from Joe Tortolano and Collins then shot straight at Billy Thomson. At the other end substitute Hamish French saw his effort blocked by Andy Goram with quarter of an hour left and that ended the goalmouth action of a match which we were happy to take a point.
