Match Report
United had completed all four of their League Cup group ties by the time their "pre-season" trip to England came about, being welcomed by Salford City for a first-time meeting between the sides at the hosts' AIG Stadium.
The League Two side, famous for its 2013 acquisition by members of Manchester United's Class of '92, had Jim Goodwin's side pegged back by two goals at the interval before an improved second-half display saw Idjesse Metsoko and youngster Jamie Forrest find the net.
The hosts went ahead after 10 minutes through Macaulay Langstaff before Adebola Owolu headed home from a corner on the stroke of half-time.
United had threatened in between, with Zac Sapsford testing the Salford goalkeeper, while Jack Walton produced two smart saves at the other end.
Goodwin changed his entire outfield line-up at the interval and United improved sharply after the restart. Lorenzo Sassetti twice went close before Ross Graham saw a header cleared off the line.
The pressure paid off on 55 minutes when Idjesse Metsoko collected possession on the edge of the box following good work from Dario Naamo and fired beyond goalkeeper Norris.
United pushed for an equaliser but Salford restored their two-goal advantage seven minutes from time through 17-year-old substitute Josh Austerfield.
The Terrors responded again in the closing stages, this time Charlie Dewar driving forward down the right before finding fellow substitute Jamie Forrest, who finished calmly to make it 3-2.
