Biography

The Swedish midfielder started off with IF Algama in 1979 before moving to AIK Stolkholm. Whilst at the Rasunda Stadium, he faced United in both legs of the UEFA Cup first round tie in September 1984, playing at Tannadice in the second leg, and won the Swedish Cup in 1985. In 1986 he joined IFK Gothenburg where he again faced United, this time in the UEFA Cup final. He came on as a late substitute in the first leg at the Ullevi Stadium but missed out on the return leg at Tannadice in May 1987. A few months later he collected a Swedish Championship winners medal after Gothenburg defeated Malmo in the championship play-offs. In an effort to gain more first team football, Lars signed for Orebro in 1989, where he spent seven years playing in over 150 matches.

Tommy McLean brought Lars to Tannadice in October 1996, initially signing the former Swedish U-21 and Olympic international on a short-term contract. He made his debut in an impressive 3-1 victory away to Motherwell, playing alongside other new signings Kjell Olofsson and Erik Pedersen. A longer contract was soon agreed with United paying Orebro £100,000, and the Swedes presence in midfield meant United had three Scandinavians in their ranks for the first time since the mid-sixties and their initial impact was no less emphatic than their fellow countrymen from three decades earlier.

United went on a seventeen-game unbeaten run, with Lars scoring in a 1-1 draw back at Fir Park in April to guarantee United's qualification in Europe with a third-place finish in the Premier Division. The following season he chipped in with a few goals, including two against CE Principat in the UEFA Cup, and winners against Hibs and Inverness in the domestic cup competitions. He collected a League Cup runners-up medal in the final against Celtic at Ibrox in November 1997.

After three years at Tannadice he returned to Orebro and later became player/manager of IF Heimer and manager at IFK Eskilstuna, before returning to Orebro as coach.

  • It was debut day for two players as Lance Key in goal and Lars Zetterlund made their debuts. The Swedes presence in midfield meant United had three Scandinavians in their ranks for the first time since the mid-sixties and their initial impact was no less emphatic than their fellow countrymen from three decades earlier.Scandinavian inspired United dominated this match.

  • A return to form brought the point necessary to secure third spot, although we had to come from behind after being reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Stewart McKimmie five minutes before the interval.

  • Another late Celtic goal cost us points, the only consolation this time being that it didn't mean a defeat. Lars Zetterlund headed us into the lead from fellow Swede Kjell Olofsson's corner early in the second half.

  • Last Appearance - Clydebank 2 - 2 Dundee United

A narrow escape at Forthbank as a timely Darren Patterson counter earned us a replay. It was the second time we had to come from behind, Kjetl Olofsson's well executed equaliser negating Nicholl's rocket opener from 30 yards. Gardner drilled in an 18 yarder to give Bankies the lead again before Darren Patterson met a Joe Miller corner which though cleared had first crossed the line to save our bacon.
