A product of the Livingston youth setup, Ross had also played for Airdrie before he made his mark with Ayr United. A productive three seasons at Partick followed before he was signed to United for their successful Championship promotion campaign in 2023-24, being awarded the captaincy that same season. Injuries curtailed his later involvement thereafter, particularly during the following season in the Premiership.

Biography

Coming through the youth ranks of Hillwood Swifts BC, Ross joined Livingston at youth level in 2010, before making his professional debut for the club in May 2011. He remained with the club until December 2014, when he left to join Airdrieonians on a short-term permanent deal.

The following summer, Ross joined Ayr United where he remained for four and a half seasons before he rejoined former manager Ian McCall at Patrick Thistle. During his third season with Thistle, Docherty was part of the squad that made it to the Scottish Premiership promotion play-off final.

After leaving the Jags in the summer of 2023, Ross signed a two-year deal with United and was immediately awarded the captaincy by manager Jim Goodwin. His first season at Tannadice started well and he quickly became a key player for the side, but was ultimately plagued by injuries to his hamstring and groin.

Having only played around two thirds of the campaign, he still emerged as one of the most important players during United's successful promotion campaign, claiming an SPFL Championship winners medal.

Persistent muscle injuries curtailed Ross's first season in the Premiership with United, reducing him to just a handful of starting appearances.
