Biography


Neilson joined United on a provisional form from Edinburgh based Tartan Boys Club in May 1976, and was promoted to the reserve side during the 1977-78 season. During his time at Tannadice he was third choice keeper behind Hamish McAlpine and Andy Graham, and was sent out on loan to East Stirlingshire for a short time during the 1978-79 season. He made his one and only first team appearance for United in a Forfarshire Cup tie against Arbroath in August 1979, and then spent the rest of that season out on loan at Meadowbank Thistle.

He signed for Brechin City in the summer of 1980 for a fee of around £6,000, and spent eight years in between the goalposts at Glebe Park. He was part of their 1982/83 Scottish League Division Two Champions squad, helping them win promotion to the First Division. In 1988 Derek joined Berwick Rangers, where he played for five seasons before finishing his career with junior club Arniston Rangers.
