Match Report

Having played four league games without a win, Alex Smith made three changes for the first Dundee derby of the season at Tannadice. Arnar Gunnlaughsson, Warren Cummings and Charlie Miller were brought in while Allan Smart dropped to the bench. Derek Lilley and Jamie McCunnie were left out altogether.

United had a chance to score in the opening minute thanks to a Gunnlaughsson pass, setting up Craig Easton to knock the ball on to Steven Thompson who had his shot blocked. Stuart Duff came close ten minutes later with a 20 yard strike, which flew wide following a positive run down the wing. Action swung from end to end in the early stages as both teams looked to break the deadlock. Nacho Novo for Dundee cut inside in the 21st minute to shoot into the far corner but Paul Gallacher was alert to the try and pulled off a good save. Gallacher again had to react well when a Stuart Lovell header was sent goalward as the first half ended goalless.

The second half continued with the end-to-end theme as both sides looked for a breakthrough. Danny Griffin came close with a 25 yard effort, shooting straight at Speroni and in 54 minutes, Gallacher saved once again, this time from Gavin Rae. Two minutes later, Novo played Lovell in on goal, but Gallacher again was up to the challenge. A Griffin free kick from thirty yards out was fired over the bar with twenty minutes remaining. Shortly after, referee John Underhill's patience was broken as Allan Smart went in late on Jonay Hernández, resulting in a post-incident melee between Rae, Hernández and the United man. The end result was a red card for Smart, reducing United to ten men. Undeterred, United forced a save from Speroni when Griffin directed a free kick over the wall towards goal. With the man advantage though, Dundee took to the counter-attack and a headed chance for Lee Wilkie was cleared by Kevin McGowne. The final chance of the game fell to Easton, who could only head a Jim Paterson cross over the bar, and the game ended with no score.
