Although the final score-line does not reflect United's superiority, this victory did hoist us into second place behind the other Edinburgh side from Tynecastle. Eamonn Bannon hit a spectacular volley to give us both points in the first half after he had been denied by fine saves by Alan Rough. A free-kick on the right by Ian Redford was headed out by Mark Fulton, but only as far as Eamonn Bannon who volleyed powerfully past Alan Rough from around 10 yards.
The second half was punctuated by a series of fouls as United took advantage of the Easter Road slope but we failed to capitalise on any of the numerous dead-bail situations. Hibs best chance of levelling the scores followed a swift run down the left but Gordon Durie put too much elevation on his finish as Hibs began to threaten late in the game.
