In the build-up to this tie, Eddie Morrison, the Killie manager, indicated that his team would require to give 110% effort. Well, at the end of the day, he could have no compIaints either at his side's commitment or the final result.
The First Division side never allowed us to settle into our normal style of play. Indeed the only real chance in the first half fell to the men from Ayrshire when Ian Bryson was first put in the clear by Tom McCafferty. Fortunately he only half hit his shot straight to Billy Thomson. Early in the second half, Dave Narey took a Davie Dodds pass before surging forward to despatch an inch perfect pass to Paul Sturrock who quickly fired in a low shot past McCulloch. This failed to quell the hard-working visitors. But even they might have failed to recover from a two-goal deficit had Paul Sturrock's shot, following a through ball from Tommy Coyne, not struck the post and rebounded into McCulloch's grateful arms.
From that moment Killie stepped up their efforts and gained their reward after Bryson brought out a superb one-handed save by Billy Thomson. The equaliser was only temporarily delayed, however. From the corner taken by McGivern, Ian Bryson headed high into the top right corner despite Maurice Malpas' vain goal-line attempts. Just under ten minutes from the end came our last chance to win the tie. Paul Sturrock fired in a low shot, Alan McCulloch blocked it but couldn't hold the ball and Kevin Gallacher scooped the rebound fractionally past the far post.
