Match Report

This tie was anticipated as being closely fought, but at half-time the balance of power was strongly in United's favour after Ralph Milne had given us a two goal lead. However, Saints regrouped after the break and were in charge for most of the second half and almost snatched a late equaliser, but couldn't prevent United going through to no less than our seventh successive League Cup Semi-final. In the opening 45 minutes United produced probably their best football of the season as they powered their way to a two goal lead. Early signs of United's dominance came when an Ian Redford shot clipped the cross bar. A goal wasn't long delayed though. A long throw by John Holt was flicked on by Richard Gough's head and the ball arrived at the feet of Ralph Milne who blasted the ball home from close in.

The loss of Eamonn Bannon wasn't apparent when the Saints' defence failed to clear a punch out from Campbell Money and Ralph Milne pounced on the loose ball to find the net. A Davie Dodds header looked to have put us three ahead but it drifted past the far post. Without Eamonn Bannon in the second half we lost the initiative and Saints put themselves back in the match when Brian Gallacher, finding himself in the clear, flicked the ball over the advancing Hamish McAlpine.
