Match Report

Two goals down at the interval, even the most fervent United supporter would not have given a lot for his side's chances, but the new found resolve evident against Dundee, once more came to the fore as we fought back to gain a deserved point. The less said about the first half, the better. Suffice to say, there was hardly a credible attempt on goal to report, and we could have no complaints at the two goal interval deficit! Some quick-thinking by Valakari was responsible Motherwell's opener. His swiftly taken free-kick
picked out McCulloch and he drilled the ball just inside the far post. The same player also scored the home side's second when McMillan, at the far post, scooped the ball back across goal for McCulloch to force home a header from close in. McCulloch was unlucky not to have gone in at the interval with a hat-trick to his credit, having hit the base of the post and seen David Worrell clear his follow up effort off the line between his two strikes. Much more purposeful after the interval, Magnus Skoldmark was unlucky to see his first time shot deflected for a corner as United turned up the heat on the Motherwell defence. However, all hopes of a come-back were almost dashed when Goodwin caught Alan Combe in possession. He cut the ball back to Spencer whose shot fortunately clipped the top of the bar with the goal at his mercy. Otherwise, the second half was dominated by United. Goram tipped a netbound Billy Dodds curler over before we finally got back into the game. As against Dundee, the introduction of Joaquim Ferraz was to prove crucial. Shortly after replacing Steven Thompson, he was impeded in the penalty box by Mathie, going for a David Worrell cross. Billy Dodds blasted home our first spot kick award of the season to put United right back in the match. Eight minutes from the end, the Portuguese striker capped our impressive second half performance with a terrific equaliser. David Hannah crossed from the left and Ferraz sent in a looping header from 12 yards which evaded Goram's out-stretched arm. We might even have won the game in the closing minutes, but a draw was probably a fair result after coming back from a seemingly hopeless position at
the interval.
