Ian McCall made changes to the United line-up in a bid to find the first points of the season. Some changes were enforced whilst others were made in a bid to find the winning formula. Particularly in defence and midfield.
United opened brightly and Barry Robson's crosses were causing concern for Hearts. Despite a good opening twenty minutes, United found themselves behind. Dennis Wyness won a free-kick 20 yards out and Hamill rolled the ball to the right for Phil Stamp who drilled an effort low through the visitors’ defensive wall and into the net past Gallacher. Things went from bad to worse a matter of minutes later. The unfortunate Mark Wilson headed the ball back towards his keeper but Gallacher came off his line and the ball found its way into the unguarded net. With 35 minutes played an already difficult task for United became virtually impossible as Mark de Vries turned in the box beating both Griffin and McCracken before he fired home from just outside the six-yard box.
The match was over as a contest at half time and Hearts continued to seek goals in the second half. United didn't offer much in an attacking sense. Indeed, only two shots from United during the entire 90 minutes only added to the disappointment amongst the traveling United support.
