Match Report

With three of our four midweek internationalists out through injury our line-up had a somewhat unfamiliar look. However despite that up until the last quarter of an hour we appeared to be doing rather well. Backed by a biting Easterly wind in the first period Saints were penned in their own half. Kevin Gallacher had the ball in the net but was ruled offside after 18 minutes. The same player then shot wide after a superb ball by Eamonn Bannon had split the home defence John Clark hit an overhead shot just over and Money then had to make good saves from Kevin Gallacher and Billy McKinlay. The inevitable was only staved off for a minute or so. A low cross from Kevin Gallacher was pushed into Ian Redford's path by Eamonn Bannon and Ian turned to shoot low past Money from just inside the box.

Even against the elements after the turnaround, we looked to be in control though Alan Main did bring off a tremendous reflex save from a point blank McDowell header. The complexion of the match changed seven minutes later when a Cameron corner was headed in by Neale Cooper. A few minutes later Kenny McDowell went down In the box in a tussle with Maurice Malpas and Ian Cameron slotted in the penalty award. Although it wasn't known at the time this was a Cup Final dress rehearsal and a repeat result would be highly unwelcome on May 16.
