This vital League clash was anti-climatic for United fans with Billy Thomson, following an injury in the warm-up, a virtual passenger for the entire 90 minutes. This blow handed the initiative to Rangers, but in the final analysis, we could consider ourselves unlucky not to salvage a point. There was an element of fortune attached to Rangers goal. Cooper slung over a cross, Dave McPherson’s header rebounded off his captain Terry Butcher and fell back to the youngster who crashed the ball past Billy Thomson. The limping United 'Keeper was beaten by Ally McCoist but the ball struck the post.

Early in the second half Maurice Malpas saw Chris Woods bring off a fine save and for most of the second half it was united who pressed forward. A late rally in which an Iain Ferguson brought out a quite superb save by Woods almost brought us a point which on balance, and in the circumstances, we probably deserved.
