This turned out to be one of the most pulsating derby matches for a long time. Many thought Dundee, with only the Cup to play for, would perhaps take it easy in view of their weekend quarter-final tie at Kilbowie, but derby matches never produce such a luxury. Puting our own poor performance behind us, we started off well, controlling the first 25 minutes but without threatening Geddes as often as our pressure deserved. Midway through the half Dundee fought their way back into the match, notably when Tommy Coyne created a fine opening with his final shot going narrowly wide At the other end Paul Sturrock appeared to be brought down in the box and Dundee broke quickly and John Brown beat Billy Thomson from 25 yards.
From the moment the second half started we piled on the pressure. Paul Sturrock, in particular, was unlucky to see a shot evade the far post Paul was, however, the instigator of our equaliser He trapped a punt by Billy Thomson, before setting Kevin Gallacher away and Kevin beat the advancing Geddes from just inside the box. Dundee fleetingly came back into the picture but only acrobatics by Geddes prevented Eamonn Bannon and Iain Ferguson scoring. The match ended with an effort from Iain Ferguson which was narrowly wide of the far post.
