After the excitement of last week's encounter with Hearts, this was a marked disappointment. The loss of both also cost us second place on goal difference in the table to Rangers, who have the added advantage of a game in hand. Although the first half was largely dominated by Rangers, it is fair to say that Billy Thomson was not called into action on too many occasions. In 25 minutes the Ibrox side did get the ball in the net when Graeme Souness drove a short pass from a Davie Cooper free-kick through the tangerine defensive wall but a linesman's flag brought the Ibrox cheers to a halt. As the interval approached we began to make some inroads into the light blues dominance.
However, a minute into the second half disaster struck, Roberts dispossessed Jim Mdnally and bore in on goal. Billy Thomson blocked his path but Ally McCoist drove in the loose ball. Worse followed when Iain Ferguson was carried off and, almost immediately, Rangers went further ahead. A long Butcher free-kick was nodded on and John Fleck's volley beat Thomson.
