Love Street hasn't been a happy hunting ground for us in recent seasons, and given the absence of Paul Hegarty, Dave Narey and Paul Sturrock, the odds didn't appear to be in our favour as we took on a Saints side unbeaten in their last four outings. However, though the match may have been far from a classic, there was no doubt about our fighting qualities in the face of adversity. We made a good start and Jim Mclnally's low cross almost brought reward but Eamonn Bannon failed to squeeze the ball home from a very acute angle. Towards half-time Kevin Gallacher took advantage of a defensive slip and from his cross, Eamonn sent in a curling shot which was a shade too high and wide. The best move of the game so far came two minutes before half-time when Eamonn Bannon's cross from the left was headed goalwards by Iain Ferguson, but Money saved at full stretch.
Early in the second half Frank McGarvey failed to beat Billy Thomson, when clean through. Ian Ferguson, the Paisley version, brought out a good save from Billy Thomson, who dealt soundly with anything that came his way. As time ran out, Ralph Milne was brought down in the box by Godfrey. Saints claimed otherwise, but the referee awarded a penalty and hot-shot Iain Ferguson slammed in our winner from the spot.
