Match Report

The Tannadice goal machine moved through to the West as did the Tannadice crowd, thanks to the generous offer of free admission. United covered the cost of around 4,100 fans who made the trip to Morton. The exercise in paying the fans' admission cost the Tannadice club more than £6000. However, as the crowd swelled in the lead up to kick off, the Directors would have been glad of the investment as the noise reached unprecedented levels.

For the first 30 minutes, it looked as though Morton were going to push United all the way. It was end to end stuff as both side set about trying to notch the crucial opening goal. It was the large travelling support that were first to celebrate though as Morton slipped up, to costly repercussions. Jim Duffy fouled Richard Gough on the edge of the box and that gave dead ball expert Eamonn Bannon the chance. He swerved in a wicked free-kick which struck the post. When the ball ran along the line, Davie Dodds slid in to connect and put United ahead. As we had seen in previous weeks, once United got their first the tension lifted and they began to play better football.

Early in the second half, Dave Narey grabbed number two. He chested down a header from Dodds and swept a great drive past Roy Baines. Ralph Milne sunk Benny Rooney's side with a third in the 64th minute and the United fans raised the noise level a further few decibels. There were a few hearts in mouths when Hamish McAlpine had to leave the pitch with a thigh injury and required a couple of stitches. Paul Hegarty went into goal, but it made no difference to the outcome of the match. After opening the scoring, Davie Dodds also completed the rout. With twenty minutes remaining, he got his second and United's fourth goal. There was certainly no signs of a United crack up here. If United's nerve holds for another 180 minutes of football, they will be Premier League champions and Scotland's representatives in next seasons European Cup.
