Match Report

After a two week international break allowing time to recharge, United continued their quest for European football as they welcomed Ross County to Tannadice. After defeat last time out against Celtic in Glasgow Jackie McNamara, taking charge in his 100th match, made three changes to his starting line-up. In came Sean Dillon, Chris Erskine and Aidan Connolly as the hosts looked to put a bad month of results behind them. Dropping out were Calum Butcher and Charlie Telfer who took a place on the bench while Ryan McGowan missed out through suspension.

It was a really encouraging start from the Tangerines as Nadir Ciftci and Connolly laid siege to the County goal. Their link up play led to two early chances, one for each, which were just scrambled clear by the Highlanders’ rear guard. John Rankin then had the chance to shoot from outside the area and his solid right foot effort appeared to strike a defender’s arm, but referee Steven McLean waved play on before Ciftci lashed the ball into the net from an offside position. The visitors won their first corner in the 11th minute when Radoslaw Cierzniak had to turn a Liam Boyce effort over the bar and from this County went ahead against very much against the run of play. Martin Woods kick was headed firmly into the net inside the 6 yard area by Jackson Irvine to leave the home side stunned. As the hosts looked to respond they survived a shout for a penalty when Dillon appeared to make contact with Irvine on the outer edge of the box but then immediately they responded to level the match. Connolly surged forward at the County goal, using Spittal and Erskine as decoy, before being barged to the deck for a clear penalty after the initial shot was blocked. Nadir Çiftçi stepped up and coolly slotted home into Mark Brown’s left corner in front of the United fans behind the goal. Despite County looking dangerous at times it was the Terrors who were doing most of the pressing and they had another effort in the 32nd minute when John Souttar headed a Paul Dixon free kick into the arms of Brown. Paul Paton then had a shot from outside the area blocked as the hosts looked for an advantage before half time before Spittal struck low towards goal right on the whistle with Brown saving easily.

Six minutes into the half Paul Dixon was yellow carded for pulling back Boyce following a short ball back to the keeper from Jaroslaw Fojut. The free kick in a dangerous position was drifted in by Woods but Paul Quinn could only head well over from 6 yards. United then had a free kick opportunity at the other end after Spittal was tackled high by Boyce and the youngster took the kick himself but the attempt was held competently by Brown. The game had become a scrappy affair with chances limited at both ends but in the 68th minute there was a let off for the Tangerines when County had a goal disallowed. Woods corner was again headed home from close range by Irvine but this time a foul by Boyce on Cierzniak had prevented him reaching the ball meaning McLean blew for the foul. Ciftci then had a shot blocked at the other end before the hosts fell behind for the second time. A Filipe Kiss cross from the right was headed on by Irvine to bring out a great save from Cierzniak but Raffaele De Vita was on hand to slot the loose ball home unchallenged. Robbie Muirhead and Charlie Telfer were brought on as McNamara looked to swing things back United’s way and both had half chances shortly after arriving on the field. First Telfer struck over from 22 yards before Muirhead slipped whilst trying to direct Ciftci’s lay back towards goal. The hosts struggled to make chances against a stubborn away side and in the end couldn’t salvage a point and in turn suffered a blow to their European prospects.

Manager's Comment:
"Disappointed because I don't think we deserved to lose the game. I don't there were many opportunities in the game to score goals. Unfortunately, they've had two free headers and it's been costly. It's a derby up next. That's an ideal preparation for me, a chance to go there against your local rivals and try and get the three points.”

Fan's Comment:
“Well, nothing has changed after the international break. Still shipping goals and the team are bereft of confidence in every department on the pitch. Defensively we are struggling to get through a game without conceding at least two goals and we look unable to score from open play. The season is unravelling very quickly.”
