It was a young United squad that headed into the Kingdom of Fife to celebrate the opening of Dundonald Bluebell's new dressing room facilities. Work at Moorside Park had been partly funded by the Sports Council and a presentation was made prior to the match. This match also went down in the history books as the final match taken by Jim McLean.
As to the match itself, the physically stronger Fife Junior side made the more threatening start and Pat Clark cleared off the line after 17 minutes. However, seven minutes later, Andy McLaren stabbed home a cross from the left to give a young United side the lead. Kevin Biggart was denied by a great save by their keeper five minutes from half time as United began to dictate play.
In 52 minutes, Mark Perry hit the outside of the post, but United did get a second thirteen minutes later. Robbie Winters caught a defender in possession and ran on to slip the ball under the advancing keeper. Twelve minutes from time, John Clark headed an Andy McLaren corner down and Robbie Winters hammered in his second with a shot into the roof of the net to complete the scoring.
