Match Report

The Partick Thistle side for this game was decimated by illness and injury. This meant that most felt it unlikely that Thistle would record their first win over United since March 1995. United had the chance to overtake Celtic and move into second place in the Scottish Premiership. McNamara stuck by the line-up that took apart Dundee in the New Year's Day derby.

Looking confident following the Derby victory, United immediately took the game to the hosts and a save from Paul Gallacher prevented Mackay-Steven scoring in the opening minutes. It didn't take long for the Scotland cap to threaten again as he found space in behind the Thistle defence following a Ciftci chip. This time Gary Mackay-Steven made no mistake and clipped it past Gallacher and into the far corner of the net. Thistle worked hard and fought their way back into the game. Fraser's corner kick evaded Cierzniak and Ryan Stevenson Looped his header into the net. Thistle turned the game round before half time when McDaid was unable to get a shot away under pressure, but Doolan pounced to fire home the loose ball.

McNamara brought on midfielders Blair Spittal and Charlie Telfer for John Rankin and defender Keith Watson at half time and United looked more assured in he second half. United got themselves back level when a Mackay-Steven weaved his way from his own half to edge of the Thistle box before laying the ball off for Nadir Çiftçi to slam home. United came close in stoppage time but a draw was a fair result, extending United's unbeaten run against the Glasgow side to 17 games.

Manager's Comment:
“I thought we started well, we were comfortable and got off to a good start. We could have scored in the first minute. We lost a disappointing goal from a corner and then lost our shape and discipline after that. We were second to every ball and probably lucky to only be 2-1 behind at half time. The second half we were much better after I made the substitutions and could have won it near the end."

Fan's Comment:
“We were lucky to get a point from this match although if we are hoping to challenge for the league, these are the games we need to grind out wins. Looked comfortable in the early stages but fell to pieces after the equaliser from Partick. Took control again towards the end but it was too late to claim the three points.”
