United travelled to Shawfield for the first teams first friendly of the season against a well organised Clyde side who proved a hard side to break down. But United put in a strong performance, with a well drilled side that was strong in defence, progressive in midfield and nippy and astute up front.
The first half was well competed affair with neither side able to make the breakthrough. United replaced the injured Joe Ward at half time with John Reilly. The second half was proving to be frustrating for the Tangerines again with a Ralph Milne thunderbolt striking the bar. United finally broke the Clyde resilience down when Paul Sturrock put them ahead in the 72nd minute. Sturrock latched onto a Ralph Milne slip and from 15 yards sent a right foot rocket past Young in the Clyde goal. John Reilly scored a gift of a second in the 80th minute, easily picking his spot from a Paul Sturrock cut back. Paul Sturrock added a third in the 80th minute, heading home from a Derek Addison cross. Alex Taylor replaced Ian Gibson with five minutes remaining but the match as a contest was over.
