Match Report

The average age of the side which faced First Division Emmen was under 23 and they faced a much physically stronger Dutch side.

Our first chance to take the lead came in the 16th minute when John Clark rose to meet an Andy McLaren corner, but his header was cleared off the line by Costing.

We had an even better opportunity to go ahead in the 30th minute, Hamish French got on the end of a loose ball and was hauled to the ground as he rounded the goalkeeper. Young Andy McLaren, starting a match for the first time, struck the post and was then pulled up for trying to net the rebound before another had touched the ball.

Three minutes later we were foiled by yet another goal-line clearance. Hamish French had his shot blocked on the goal-line. The ball broke to Andy McLaren, who saw his effort kicked off the line by Veldwijk.

The Emmen goal continued to bear a charmed life. In the 38th minute John Clark hit a close range effort off the post. The only surprise at half-time was that the score-sheet remained blank.

Early in the second half, Haak was booked for a series of persistent fouls. Alan Main and John Clark combined to deny Oostrum as Emmen went on the offensive. However, shortly after coming on, Darren Jackson was booked for dissent after being refused a penalty when the goalkeeper upended him in the box.

The Referee then produced a red card when Vollcerink was sent off for deliberate hand ball as Darren Jackson bore in on goal just outside the penalty area. In the last quarter of an hour Billy McKinlay took over from AIex Cleland in midfield, however, Emmen almost grabbed a winner eleven minutes from the end and only a magnificent save by Alan Main kept out Van Oostirum's header.

We had a great opportunity to grab a victory five minutes from the end, but Darren Jackson volleyed over. So the match against a very physical Dutch side ended goalless.
