Match Report

An all-ticket Tannadice crowd of 23,300 rolled up in an expectant mood with United having completed a successful run in the weeks prior to the tie while the men from Ibrox had just returned from an exhausting European trip to Milan. However, in typical Rangers fashion the visitors were in no mood to lose the cup occasion — as their tactics showed right from the
first whistle. This was the game in which Ibrox full-back Dave Provan was given the job of attempting to mark United's new Swedish star Orjan Persson out of the game — and what followed was almost comical in that the big Ranger shadowed the Swede over every inch of Tannadice. And it paid off for Rangers when after a goalless first half Jim Forrest nipped in in 48 minutes to grab the lead and shake United into renewed efforts. Billy Ritchie produced save after save of truly high class to prevent United's attempted comeback from paying off before Forrest raced away in the dying minutes to add to Rangers lead.
