Match Report

United entered this game as clear favourites. Saints had acute injury problems prior to the match and received a further blow when Bill McCarry had to move to the wing (no substitutes at that time). However, these disruptions didn't upset Saints, and lan Hawkshaw spliced the Tannadice rearguard setting up the perfect chance for Jim Kerray to put United in arrears in the 23rd minute. Four minutes later and Saints were two goals ahead, when a long-range effort from Jim Narrower beat Donald Mackay. Take away these goals, and there was little between the sides. United clearly missed the services of Denis Gillespie and without his guile, the Perth defence was rarely penetrated. Long-range shots were all that United could muster and the nearest of these, was a raking left-footer from Lewis Thorn which smacked off the woodwork with Fallen well beaten. After a highly successful League Cup campaign, United found themselves one of four sides without a League win after two League outines.
