Deprived of at least five regulars, United still managed to control the game for long periods and gained the points in comfortable style. The un-seasonal chill in the air and strong wind allied with a bumpy pitch made good football difficult but both sides acquitted themselves well, despite the conditions. Toiling Dumbarton's fight against relegation was dealt an early blow when an Alex Taylor corner was nodded in by Tommy Coyne.
Sons' 'keeper Gordon Arthur had several good saves, notably from a Ralph Milne header and a John Clark free-kick, but he had to admit defeat to Paul Sturrock, who controlled a through ball, lost his marker and sent a superb shot past Arthur from the edge of the box. The defeat left Dumbarton all but mathematically relegated after just one season in the Top Ten.
