A potentially tricky tie on paper in reality provided a relatively comfortable passage into the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup.
Although the Doonhamers rarely threatened to score they defended stoutly in the early stages, restricting United to only a handful of chances in the first half, the most notable being a solo run by Maurice Malpas, a Billy Kirkwood header, and a Davie Dodds header which struck the post. Two minutes from half-time Davie Dodds broke the deadlock when he took advantage of a slip by Gray to hammer the ball past Davidson from 12 yards.
Then Eamonn Bannon cracked in a loose ball seven minutes into the second half to effectively end any hopes of Queens' springing a surprise. After missing a series of good chances, Davie Dodds volleyed in a third near the end to cap a fine overall performance by the striker who had just returned from injury.
