The firm pitch and icy wind did little to enhance spectator comfort and also contributed to a rather jack-lustre game, during which neither goalkeeper was ever under any great pressure.
Rangers could justifiably claim they had the better of the first half, but the best chances of the opening 45 minutes fell to United. Paul Sturrock shot wide from an Eamonn Bannon cut back and nearer the interval Paul Hegarty's free header from a corner was saved by Walker.
The second half was fairly even and Davy Cooper for the home side and Alex Taylor for United both hesitated in front of goal when in the clear. Overall, neither side could quibble with the point they gleaned, but the draw meant Rangers stretched their unbeaten run against us to a remarkable nine games.
