Match Report

Pittodrie yet again proved a happy hunting ground for United and the winning margin could easily have been greater. After starting off in fine fashion Aberdeen surprisingly had the best early opportunity to score when Frank McDougall was adjudged to have been tripped by Richard Gough in the box. The centre took the kick himself but shot wide of the post. After dominating most of the first half United had nothing to show for their efforts.

Frank McDougall missed a chance early in the second half and that was the Dons' last scoring chance. United took the lead in the 48th minute when an Eamonn Bannon cross was headed down past Leighton by Richard Gough. That lead should have been extended in the 72nd minute but Alex Taylor knocked John Holt's fine cross just wide of the far post.
