From the moment Paul Hegarty headed in United's opening goal the final outcome was never in doubt as United demolished an over physical Austrian side.

Indeed, their equaliser in the 34th minute — a Max Hagmayr free kick which Dave Narey was unlucky enough to deflect past Hamish McAlpine — was virtually their only direct shot on target in the entire ninety minutes.

With half-time fast approaching, a thrust by Eamonn Bannon up the left led to Tommy Coyne regaining the lead. Tommy Coyne notched his second on the hour, hooking the ball in from close range. The two remaining goals were both spectacular efforts, Richard Gough swerving one in from around 30 yards and Dave Beaumont crashing home a fifth from even greater distance.
