A typically tight opening produced few chances in the early stages. A cross from Richard Gough was headed just wide by Billy Kirkwood and then Dave Narey jinked his way clear of the Celtic defence but Pat Bonner tipped his chip past the post. Celtic then went ahead with a well-worked free-kick which culminated in Murdo MacLeod's wind-assisted shot curling into the net via the underside of the bar.

Celtic's second goal came when Mo Johnston headed in a cross from Davie Provan on the right. Four minutes later United were back in the game when Eamonn Bannon hit a scorching 25-yarder, giving Bonner no chance. Another tactical free-kick ended with Peter Grant scoring a third, despite a linesman's flag.
