Match Report
The only all-Premier meeting of the round produced a comfortable victory for United. The match started quietly and the first major assault on either goal produced results. Billy Kirkwood picked up a loose ball in midfield, fed Paul Sturrock on the left and his low cross was swept home by Davie Dodds. A couple of minutes later Ralph Milne was unlucky to see a shot hit the bar.
There was a let-off for United early in the second half when Referee Young chalked off a Dumbarton equaliser. From then on, however, it was one-way traffic. Davie Dodds applied the finishing touch to a move involving Maurice Malpas, Paul Sturrock and Ralph Milne. Ralph Milne then scored two in as many minutes. First he sidestepped a defender before crashing in a left foot shot, then Ralph Milne's first time volley sneaked under the 'keeper's diving body.
