United's new system worked perfectly for most of this game and only a highly individual goal by Brian McClair denied both points coming to Tannadice.
The first half was almost totally controlled by United as they exerted their fluent style over Celtic's running game. Indeed, the goals perfectly reflected the different styles. United's in 8 minutes was a result of a neat bulid-up between Ralph Milne and Paul Sturrock which turned the Parkhead defence inside out. Paul Sturrock then passed to Billy Kirkwood who set-up the chance for Stuart Beedie. Billy Thomson's first half inactivity was a fair indication of that opening period.
Celtic, as ever, stormed back in the second half but rarely threatened the United goal, until Brian McClair took a hand in proceedings. He picked up a clearance just outside his own penalty box, ran two-thirds of the park, before blasting home a 20-yarder. Before the end. Paddy Bonner had a great save from Paul Sturrock, but at the end of the day, neither side could complain at the eventual outcome.
