Match Report

Having lost to Aberdeen by 3-0 just five days earlier, United headed to Ibrox hoping to bounce back and maintain the title challenge. Rangers were coming in to this match in poor form with only one victory in the last nine games.

The first half started well for United in front of a sparse crowd of just 15,000 at Ibrox Stadium. The away side were streets ahead in terms of quality and got the opening goal they deserved in the 12th minute. Milne switched play with a fantastic long range pass and Paul Hegarty collected it on the right before firing in a low cross. It missed the on rushing Dodds, but John Reilly did get there and crashed it home from 6 yards. United now slowed the game down to suit their own style and had Rangers in trouble with a number of quick counter attacks. The comfort seemed to turn to complacency and they paid a heavy price. Four minutes from half-time, Rangers hit back when Kennedy survived a foul tackle on the edge of the box. George Smith played advantage and the ball was chipped into the middle for Robert Prytz to head the equaliser.

During the interval Greig made a change which did much to sway the game Rangers way in the second half. He kept Robert Russell, who had a poor first half, inside and sent on Davie Cooper with a roving commission. With Cooper around, the United defence was not allowed the time or space to slow the game down. As the Tannadice men falter, Rangers grew in confidence. Alan Kennedy was the star for the home side and he got his reward in 63 minutes when he chested down a Johnstone head flick, swivelled and fired past McAlpine to give Rangers the lead. United never really looked like getting back into the match and at the end of the day Rangers deserved their victory. This was a severe jolt to Tannadice title aspirations, especially after the 3-0 defeat by Aberdeen five days earlier. This was the first occasion on which Jim McLean's men suffered two successive defeats this season.
