Station Park is becoming something of a bogey ground for United, this being their second visit as champions and their second defeat ! John Clark had given United the lead in 24 minutes after good work on the right by Paul Hegarty and Aiex Taylor. Within a minute Forfar were level when their own John CIark back-headed a Bennett cross past Hamish McAlpine.
There was no further scoring despite several near misses at both ends and extra time failed to determine a winner.
In the penalty shoot-out McDonald, Turnball, Gallacher, McPhee and Clark all converted for the home side. Eamonn Bannon and Ralph Milne both missed and Paul Hegarty, Billy Kirkwood (on the retake) and Davie Dodds did hit the target though the latter pair's efforts were of academic purpose only.
