The first competitive action of the new term took place at Dens Park. United took on Dundee in the long delayed 79-80 final of the Forfarshire Cup. Over 9,000 fans were in attendance to see what side of the street would pick up the silverware.
This local derby began at a hectic pace with both sides creating chances. Mackie went close for Dundee and Gough had an effort well saved from Blair. Fine leading up work on the left by Ferguson in the 10th minute left Fraser in the clear 20 yards out but his first time effort was brilliantly held by McAlpine. The home side went ahead in the 12th minute through defender Ian McDonald. A Ferguson corner was nodded on at the front post by Sinclair and although McAlpine did well to block this effort, the big defender made no mistake the second time in nodding the ball home from close in. McAlpine came to the visitor's rescue in the 35th minute when he did well to hold a Ferguson header after a good run by Mackie had created the chance.
United turned on the style in the second half and began to dominate. Their pressure would finally tell when first, Ralph Milne got on the score-sheet and then striker Davie Dodds wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute.
