The pre season preparations continued, with a visit to Shielfield to play Berwick Rangers, in a match that Berwick made United fight all the way for the victory. United were a slick looking outfit but Berwick showed a lot of flair and imagination and at times United were forced too defend with nine men behind the ball.
The match was only 10 minutes old when United struck, the Berwick defence was caught flat footed and inside forward Graeme Payne whipped the ball home from an acute angle. Berwick continued to press United but they lacked the killer touch in the final third. The Shielfield keeper Mark Glynn pulled off a series of fine saves before the Tannadice attacker John Reilly beat him with a flying header only to see the effort ruled out by the linesman flag for offside. However John Reilly was not to be denied and in 39 minutes he finally got his name on to the scoresheet with a header that gave Glynn in goal no chance. Throughout the 2nd half Berwick took the fight to United with substitute Peter Davidson the danger man. The attacker linked up well with Micky Lawson but McAlpine saved the shot, then he burst through brilliantly on his own only to see McAlpine block his fierce drive. With 10 minutes remaining substitute Billy Kirkwood slotted home the 3rd for United.
