Match Report

Dundee United faced up to Italians Fiorentina in the semi-final of the Japan Cup tournament. Andy Graham started in goal for United after Hamish McAlpine was banished from the tour following a disagreement with manager Jim McLean.

In what was a very well matched encounter, United had two good chances in the first half to take the lead. Ray Stewart missed a penalty and then the Fiorentina keeper made a very good save from a Davie Dodds effort. However, with the match running towards half time, the Italians took the lead and went down the tunnel one up.

Ray Stewart made amends for his first half penalty miss when he converted one in the second half in 65 minutes. There was no further scoring and the match went to penalties to decide who would meet Spurs in the final.

Walter Smith, Stewart, Kirkwood and Sturrock all scored for United. Keeper Andy Graham made two fine saves from the Italians and that was enough to send United into the final. The match left a few players injured and at risk for the final with Holt and Sturrock sidelined with ankle knocks and Dodds nursing a similar injury. Work was also required with the SFA to keep Ray Stewart for the final as he was due to play for the under 21s in Norway.
