There was a great deal of early promise for the United supporters in the sell-out crowd as United took the game to the newly crowned Champions. Goram was grateful to palm away a crashing John Clark free-kick and then he made a fine one-handed save to keep out Christian Dailly as he ran on to Alex Cleland's through ball. Skipper Dave Bowman was the next United player to be thwarted by the Ibrox keeper. Rangers without both McCoist (broken leg) and Hateley (suspended) didn't look really threatening until near the interval when Hagen got clear of the United defence, but Alan Main came out to block.
The Champions maintained their new found momentum into the second half, but it took a large slice of luck for Rangers to get the goal. McSwegan found Peter Huistra on the left and though John Clark partially blocked his shot, the ball spun'up and over a prostrate Alan Main. So, in the end it was the point which Airdrie took from Tynecastle which ensured our European place, though an indication of how the match at Ibrox had gone came with the announcement that Andy Goram was named Man of the Match.
