There were just over 8,000 in attendance at the Gallowgate for this friendly match between two sides who had already met twice this season in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Newcastle won both those encounters so Dundee United were out looking for revenge.
On a freezing night, there was little in the first half to warm up the crowd. Both side look distinctly disinterested in this game and for the first quarter of the game they barely laid a hand on one another. Then on 26 minuted Bob Moncur struck to put Newcastle 1-0 ahead. McNamee and jinky Jim Smith were the best players on the park in the first half but there were unable to spark further goals.
Keith Dyson put Newcastle two in front after 75 minutes to start a last 15 minute goal flurry. Dundee United replied five minutes later when Davie Wilson pulled one back. The comeback was brief though and Newcastle scored their third when young Bryan Robson netted. There was still time for another goal and it went the way of the tangerines when Ian Mitchell struck on 85 minutes.
