Match Report

An enormous crowd delayed kick off by 10 minutes on New Year's day as fans of both sides crammed into Dens Park. Just over 18,000 turned up for the first match of 1983. Dundee went into this match without a derby victory since October 1979. With Celtic continuing unchallenged in their fixtures, it was vital for United to start the new year with two points.

United almost forged ahead in the 6th minute. Milne sent Sturrock scampering into the corner down the right. His sweeping cross to the far post was headed inches wide by Dodds. Two minutes later as the match took time to settle, Dundee saw their only chance in the opening 45 minutes go adrift. McGeachie's chip caught United square, but McAlpine just won the race against Stephen. But back roared the visitors from across the street and it was fortunate for Dundee that Smith was on hand to put clear, when Kelly could only parry a Sturrock cut back. In 24 minutes, United were deservedly ahead. A glorious Malpas-Bannon move down the left ended with the wingers cross being nodded home by Ralph Milne at the near post. The Dundee goal was under siege again seven minutes from half-time when Bannon's curling cross from the left was bulleted goal wards from the head of Dodds - but it cannoned off the cross-bar to safety. Dundee pair Ferguson and Glennie and United's Malpas were booked was the tension of the derby occasion burst to the surface.

Milne looked in the mood as the second half got underway. In the 58th minute, a superb Sturrock slip gave the first half goal hero a chance but his 20 yard drive slipped just wide. McAlpine had to produce his one diving save in the match to force a Sinclair header round for a corner, after a Malpas error had allowed Murphy in to the bye-line. However, two minutes later United, as if stunned by that near miss, tied things up. A long run from deep from Gough saw him feed Ralph Milne just inside the box and his angled drive ripped past Kelly for the second goal of the game.
