Some 17 years had elapsed since we last lost to St Johnstone in Perth and there appeared scant possibility of that record being blemished in the early stages of this contest. We made a confident start, enjoying plenty of possession, but significantly without breaking down the home side's five man defensive barrier. Indeed the best chance of the half fell to Saints when Andy McLaren cleared a Paul Wright header off the line.
It took us only a couple of minutes of the second half to improve on any of our first half efforts as Andy McLaren's corner was flicked on by John Clark to Victor Ferreyra, but Inglis blocked his shot. Sadly things went downhill from there on. We were lucky not to go behind as Dave Bowman somehow kept out a Paul Wright effort. A goal for Saints leading scorer was delayed for only a minute. Paul Wright cut in from the right before shooting home from 14 yards via the inside of the post. Worse was to follow eleven minutes later and again Paul Wright held centre-stage as he cracked in a 20 yarder which Alan Main did well to keep out, Vinny Arkins was on hand to rifle home the rebound. We did stage a late rally, but apart from that last minute siege around Rhodes, Saints held on with relative comfort to record their first ever win over us at McDiarmid Park.
