The United line up for this game raised a few eyebrows. Out went Billy McKinlay, Alex Cleland, Gary Bollan and Paddy Connolly from the side which had drawn at Brockville. The two replacements to cause most surprise were Victor Ferreyra, back after a five match absence and Northern Ireland Internationalist Michael O'Neill who'd only recently signed a short term contract and hadn't figured in the first team for over a year. In the build up to this game Manager Jim McLean had called for a battling approach and this call was answered by the players, though not before we had survived a series of near things in front of Alan Main's goal, particularly in the first half. Evans and Wright were the main sinners In one instance, Dave Narey cleared off the line from Keith Wright when the former Dundee striker had the goal at his mercy. However, as the interval beckoned Duncan Ferguson served notice that we weren't out of contention when he headed against the post.
The second half opened with a bizarre booking for Burridge for illegally marking the pitch. In complete contrast to the first half and with John Clark and Freddy van der Hoorn having swapped roles, Hibs hardly had an attack of note after the break and now it was our turn to carve out chances. Burridge made an outstanding one-handed save from Victor Ferreyra who was in fine form. The Hibs keeper did likewise to keep out an Andy McLaren effort as the United attacks gained momentum and our efforts paid off nine minutes from time when Maurice Malpas swung over a cross from the left. Victor Ferreyra chested it down and Jim McInally was first to react as he stole in to nick the ball past Burridge for his second goal in successive matches. So, a game in which we could easily have been counted out by the interval ended with two points and continued Hibs wretched record at Tannadice.
