Match Report

Davie Dodds returned to the starting line-up, swapping places with Billy Kirkwood from the bench. Other than that, it was the same team that hammered Kilmarnock at Tannadice the week before. Billy Kirkwood dropped out of the side, leaving the tangerines with an attacking look. Morton had Davie Hayes in for his first game of the season after injury and Tony Higgins was the player to drop out.

Cappielow, so often a graveyard for United, provided a tricky surface with hard packed snow on the surface. Morton opened strongly, with Maurice Malpas clearing from John McNeil in the third minute. United hit back with a John Reilly effort that was well held by Roy Baines. Morton took the lead in the 12th minute, when Jim Duffy pushed a high ball into the United box and Eddie McNab wheeled to slam the ball first-time past Hamish McAlpine off the far post. A long range Ian Cochrane shot whistled past McAlpine's post in the 23rd minute, and Dave Narey worked his way into a great position for the equaliser, but shot weakly at Baines. United's equaliser came a minute later, when a Ralph Mline corner wasn't cleared and John Reilly's overhead kick found the net. Just before half-time, Baines had to dive to stop a Milne effort.

A minute after the second half started, Sturrock broke clear and his measured cross was met by Reilly. However, he mistimed his leap and it hit off his shoulder and bounced wide. Shortly after, Houston had to go off for treatment after a nose knock following a challenge by Hegarty. United took the lead 22 minutes into the second half, when Paul Sturrock slid in to finish off a cross from Eamonn Bannon, after the winger had chased a wayward pass to the bye-line. Despite falling behind early on, United were always in control of this match, and saw the game out to remain in second place in the Premier League table.
