Match Report

United started the game in positive fashion and took the lead in the 7th minute through David Goodwillie. A lovely ball down the right hand channel into the area fed Goodwillie and he teased and tormented Ellis before lashing the ball across and past the helpless McNeil in the Raith goal from 14 yards.

United continued to dominate and went further ahead in the 17th minute. Great pressure in midfied by Scott Robertson was rewarded when the midfielder robbed Davidson and exchanged passes with Goodwillie before setting the striker up to send the ball into the Raith net via the left hand post.

It was 3-0 in 24 minutes and that man Goodwillie was involved once more. A long ball from Kenneth sent the striker away down the left and after checking back, he looked up and sent a floated ball to the back post where David Robertson arrived to thump a tremendous volley past McNeil.

United had the ball in the net again in the 29th minute after Kenneth’s looping header was bundled over the line by Zelmikas but the assistant referee’s raised flag indicated that the trialist had ventured offside and the goal was ruled out.

Any hopes Raith had of mounting a comeback disappeared in the 47th minute. Great work by Cadamarteri on the left saw him glide past Wilson before delivering a perfect ball for Prince Buaben to arrive and bullet a header from 12 yards into the Raith Rovers net for 4-0.

The scoring was complete in the 83rd minute with the pick of the bunch. Another dangerous David Robertson cross into the Raith area was cleared as far as Sean Dillon, 25 yards out. and after controlling the ball, the irishman unleashed a drive high beyond McNeil into the keeper’s top left hand corner for 5-0 united.
