At half-time anything other than a comfortable victory for us appearing quite inconceivable. The first 45 minutes saw us play our best football for quite some time as we penned Dundee back in their own half. Indeed it was fully 15 minutes before Billy Thomson even touched the ball! During that opening salvo, we had scored once, hit the post and seen a couple of shots blocked. In six minutes, Kevin Gallacher broke down the right, shrugged off Duffy's challenge, and released the perfect centre, from which Iain Ferguson had time to pick his spot with his header. Seven minutes later Kevin Gallacher, again scampered down the right and his cross was met by Ian Redford, whose shot was deflected onto the post. Dundee were only seen in sporadic forays in attack as we kept up the pressure; Geddes saved well from Paul Sturrock; Kevin Gallacher didn't connect properly with a superb cossfield from lain Ferguson; and Ian Redford's powerful header was almost on target. In the last minute of the first half Dundee had their best chance. Coyne and McKinlay almost squeezing in the equaliser.
The second half opened with another onslaught of the Dundee goal. lain Ferguson shot over, but despite our dominance clear cut chances were few and far between. Gradually, Dundee clawed their way back into the match and in the last ten minutes Billy Thomson was busy dealing with shots from Coyne and Angus. With only five minutes remaining Tommy Coyne produced in a knock down from Keith Wright to take the tie into extra-time.
By this time Dundee, having been let off the hook, were the more threatening, and their winner came in the 98th minute when Keith Wright took a return pass from Coyne to slot the ball past Billy Thomson for the winner. A quite remarkable come-back ended in a rare Dens Park success over us, and left us rueing those missed chances earlier in the match.
