The first half of the match was a fairly even contest with both sides looking dangerous on the break. Nicholson had a very good chance for Aberdeen after only five minutes but United came back into the game and twice went close through efforts from David Fernandez. The final ten minutes of the first half changed the whole complexion of the game when the home side put the game beyond their visitors. An individual effort from Smith on 35 minutes and a tap-in from Crawford after 43 minutes had Aberdeen two up. It could have been worse for United had Severin not headed over from six yards on the stroke of half time.
The second half was far less entertaining with fewer chances at both ends. It was United who had the best efforts to get back into the match and both David McCracken and Garry Kenneth were unlucky to see headers cleared off the line from threatening corners by Barry Robson. Towards the end of the game Collin Samuel caused the home defence problems and Ryan Esson had to tip a dipping cross over the bar.
