Match Report

Wing-half Alex Stuart was out after only two games for his new club. Stewart Markland replaced him in the side. Bremner took over at right-back to allow Rolland to move forward. Eighteen year old Ian Letford who had just signed from Cambuslang Rangers, took over at inside right. Mitchell was dropped to the bench.

United started brightly and Cameron was first to try his luck but his shot from the edge of the penalty area rolled by the post. A neat lob from Kenny Cameron to Davie Wilson had the St Mirren defence in a panic and 'keeper Thorburn had to race out to clear. United had a lucky escape in the 12th minute when MacKay made a point blank save from Gilshan. Kenny Cameron then fluffed a great chance in front of goal and Thorburn collected. A superb run from Letford created space for a cross to Cameron. The striker got the head flick on to Reid who netted from close in. The joy was short lived when the referee called it offside. Mackay then gifted St Mirren a great opportunity when he carried the ball more than four paces and gave away a free-kick in the box. The chance though was squandered and cleared.

In the second half MacKay was tested a number of times in the early stages. First Gilshan latched onto a McCaig pass but the United 'keeper saved. Then MacKay had to dive at full stretch to save a 25 yarder from Hamilton. Young Letford was looking dangerous and he tried a long ranger after a good run but Thorburn held comfortably. With United gaining control of this game they were able to capitalise. Markland slid the ball through to Rolland and the winger held off the St Mirren defenders before feeding Kenny Cameron who scored easily from close in. St Mirren came storming back and Gillespie was forced to win a sprint with Blair to ensure he could clear the danger. St Mirren almost had a penalty in the closing minutes when Bremner cleared a shot off the line. The referee waved play on. A good performance from United with the young Letford, the outstanding player.
