However, United's strikers never troubled Bobby Clark and the defence was finally breached in the 67th minute when Henning Boel swooped on to Robb's header to knock the ball in off the post. Davie Robb's goal two minutes from time was almost academic with Aberdeen very much in charge. The Tannadice heroes were Hamish McAlpine and Wattie Smith, but even their efforts were insufficient to prevent Aberdeen advancing into the quarter-finals
