Prior to the meeting with Thistle, United had strung together five consecutive league wins in their chase for a Premier League place. Unfortunately for the Tannadice men striker Andy Gray was a non-starter through injury. But the afternoon proved to be a day of triumph for young defender Allan Forsyth. He grabbed the spotlight after seventeen minutes when sending the home side ahead from the penalty pot after Danny Kellachan had brought down Paul Sturrock.
It was Forsyth's first goal for the United top side. Thistle, themselves desperate for Top Ten points, came out after the interval with renewed vigour and were denied an equaliser when Bobby Houston's finish was adjudged to have been off side But the visitors maintained their form and looked certain to have grabbed a point when Joe Craig slipped the equaliser in with just three minutes remaining.
But back came United again and after Doug Houston had been brought crashing down in the area by a Jacky Campbell tackle, young Allan Forsyth clinched both points with his second penalty conversion of the game.
