The challenge to qualify from the section was still alive although were virtually ruled out of contention by that stage. Goals were to be of prime consideration for the Tannadice side as joint section leaders Aberdeen and Motherwell met at Fir Park the same afternoon and second qualifying spot jested on a clear cut result there, and United's ability to hammer in the goals.
Things appeared bright for the home side by the interval, by which time goals from Kenny Cameron, Andy Gray and Walter Smith had pointed the side in the right direction. United had completely dominated this match and the three first half goals were just reward for their efforts.
By the 53rd minute the chances were even better after Doug Smith had stretched the lead to 4-0 from the penalty spot (pictured below) but on the hour mark came the first blemish when Kevin Hegarty pulled one back for the Fifers. Then a 30-yarder from Billy McPhee was deflected past Hamish McAlpine to lessen the hopes even further before Duncan MacLeod completed United's 5-2 victory with a 20-yard effort. But it was all in vain as the section's leading pair played out a stalemate at Fir Park to ease their way through comfortably enough with this goal difference .
